Storm Damage Causes Countywide Disruptions – Public Urged to Use Caution

HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 21, 2025) – Due to storm damage, some Washington County Government operations and services will be temporarily impacted. The following areas and facilities are currently affected:

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

The Washington County Office of Emergency Management is advising the public on proper procedures following recent storm impacts.

If a road is completely impassable, residents are asked to call the non-emergency number at 240-313-4345 to report the issue. However, if a road is passable by at least one vehicle, please do not call.

Please do not call Emergency Management or 911 to ask about power restoration. These lines must remain open for emergencies only.

HIGHWAYS

The following roads remain closed due to storm-related damage:

  • Mooresville Road

Residents are urged to avoid these areas and never approach downed power lines, which may still be energized.

Crews are actively working alongside Potomac Edison to clear debris and restore safe access. The Highway Department’s immediate goal is to make every road passable by at least one vehicle.

PARKS & RECREATION

The Washington County Parks Department is currently responding to storm damage affecting several local parks. Cleanup efforts are underway, but the community is advised to use extra caution when visiting the following parks.

  • Regional Park
  • Camp Harding
  • Clear Spring Park
  • Doubs Woods Park
  • Marty Snook Park
  • Woodland Way Park
Storm debris and potential hazards such as fallen branches or unstable trees may still be present as staff continue their assessments and cleanup operations.

747 NORTHERN AVENUE

The following departments located at 747 Northern Avenue are currently closed due to a power outage affecting phone and internet service:

  • Permits & Inspections
  • Engineering
  • Planning & Zoning

The situation will be reevaluated tomorrow morning, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

TRANSIT

Washington County Transit Services will remain in service Monday, April 21. Passengers can expect some delays due to temporary road closures.

EMERGENCY SERVICES

The Washington County Division of Emergency Services reminds citizens to stay clear of any downed power lines and storm debris. All downed lines should be considered live and extremely dangerous. Do not attempt to move or drive over them. Report any downed lines directly to Potomac Edison and avoid the area until it is deemed safe. Public safety remains the top priority, and your cooperation is essential in helping to ensure the well-being of our community.

POWER RESTORATION

Potomac Edison is bringing in additional crews from neighboring states to assist with power restoration efforts across Washington County.
