Washington County Emergency Communications Specialist Assists in Successful Baby Delivery

HAGERSTOWN, MD (November 25, 2024) – Washington County’s 911 Communications Center is proud to announce the remarkable efforts of Emergency Communications Specialist (ECS) Bethani Mummert, who helped facilitate the successful delivery of a baby girl during a 911 call.

On Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 8:28 a.m., ECS Mummert received a 911 call reporting a woman in active labor. Demonstrating exceptional professionalism and composure, ECS Mummert immediately reassured the caller and dispatched Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Remaining on the line, she provided step-by-step pre-arrival instructions for childbirth, following protocols set by the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch (IAED).

To honor her exceptional service, ECS Mummert was presented with a stork pin and certificate, symbols of recognition for her critical role in facilitating the delivery.

“We are incredibly proud of ECS Bethani Mummert for her professionalism, dedication, and ability to provide life-saving assistance in moments that truly matter,” said Director of Emergency Management and Communications, Alan Matheny. “Her quick thinking and adherence to established protocols exemplify the excellence of our emergency communications team.”
