WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD (October 2, 2026) – The Washington County Board of County Commissioners extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of former Washington County Sheriff Charles F. Mades and to the law enforcement community following the passing of Sheriff Mades on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
In recognition of former Sheriff Mades’ distinguished service to Washington County and its residents, the Board of County Commissioners has ordered the Maryland flag and Washington County flag at all County facilities to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise on Friday, October 2, 2026, through sunset on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
Former Sheriff Mades devoted more than four decades to law enforcement and public service. After a 25-year career with the Maryland State Police, from which he retired as a sergeant, he served as Washington County Sheriff from 1986 through 2006. Throughout his career, he demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the safety and well-being of Washington County residents and the broader community.
His passing is a profound loss to Washington County and to the many residents, colleagues, and law enforcement professionals he served throughout his career. The Board extends its heartfelt sympathies to former Sheriff Mades’ family, friends, and the members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office during this difficult time.
