WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD (October 2, 2026) – Washington County Government is alerting residents and businesses to a fraudulent email currently circulating that falsely appears to come from the Washington County Planning & Zoning Department.
The email claims that recipients must pay an “Application Review and Approval Fee” by wire transfer before a planning or zoning application can continue to be processed. Recipients are directed to reply to the message for wire transfer instructions and provide proof of payment.
The email is a scam.
Washington County Government does not request application or permit payments by email through wire transfer. Anyone who receives this message should not respond, provide personal or financial information, or send money.
If you receive the fraudulent email:
- Do not reply to the sender.
- Do not provide financial information or make any payment.
- Delete the message.
- If you have questions about whether a communication is legitimate, contact the Planning & Zoning Department using the official contact information listed on the Washington County Government website.
County officials are aware of the fraudulent activity and are taking appropriate steps to address the matter. Anyone who has already responded to the email or sent payment should contact their financial institution immediately and report the incident to law enforcement.
Washington County Government encourages residents and businesses to remain vigilant when receiving unsolicited messages requesting payment. Particular caution should be used with emails involving wire transfers, requests for financial information, or urgent payment demands.
