Emergency Crews Battle Multiple Fires – Public Strongly Encouraged to Avoid Outdoor Burning

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 1, 2025) – Washington County’s Office of Emergency Management is urging residents to avoid outdoor burning at this time due to an increase in fire activity across the county. Fire crews have responded to multiple fires in the past week and are currently battling several major fires throughout the county.

Increased Fire Risk Due to Dry Conditions

Recent weather conditions, including dry air, low humidity, and strong winds, have significantly increased the potential for fires to spread rapidly. Even small outdoor fires, such as those used for burning debris or yard waste, can quickly grow out of control under these circumstances. Fire departments across Washington County have been working tirelessly to contain multiple fires, and additional incidents could place further strain on resources.

Public Urged to Take Precautions

To help reduce fire risks, the Office of Emergency Management strongly recommends the following precautions:

  • Avoid Outdoor Burning – Refrain from burning yard waste, brush, or other debris until conditions improve.
  • Properly Dispose of Cigarettes – Ensure cigarette butts are fully extinguished and disposed of in proper containers.
  • Be Cautious with Equipment – Sparks from machinery, vehicles, or grills can ignite dry grass and leaves. Keep a safe distance from flammable areas.
  • Stay Informed – Monitor local emergency updates and follow guidance from fire and emergency officials.

Emergency Crews Continue to Respond

Firefighters remain on the front lines, working around the clock to contain the current fires and prevent further spread. The Office of Emergency Management expresses its gratitude to all first responders for their dedication and hard work.

Officials will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as needed. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately by calling 911.
