Citizen Corps / Emergency Management Corps

Washington County Citizen Corps and the Emergency Management Corps were combined in 2017 in an effort to bring local agencies, businesses, and citizens together to meet the goals, objectives and challenges set by the Department of Homeland Security in conjunction with meeting the requirements of the Citizen Corps of Maryland objectives. The Washington County Citizen Corps / Emergency Management Corps Committee is a sub-committee of the Washington County Local Emergency Planning Committee.

There are two committees that make up the Washington County Citizen Corps / Emergency Management Corps. These committees are: 1) The PR Committee – responsible for coordinating with the Washington County Office of Public Relations a media campaign on awareness of the Corps and of their activities and events as well as provide public safety messages through Emergency Preparedness programs and events, 2) The Support Committee – responsible for supporting the activities of the PR Committee by ensuring that training and public education materials are available, inventory and maintenance of training equipment is maintained, and personnel are available to attend events.

Events that the Corps supports or holds for the public include a Citizen Preparedness Day and Remembrance in the Park Ceremony which are both held during the month of September, participation in National Night Out activities in August, participation in the Washington County Home Show in March, Children’s Village Open House held in May, and various other public education events held by local businesses and partner agencies.

Monthly General Membership meetings of the Corps Membership include progress reports and suggestions from the committees to be considered in the overall yearly planning.

Programs such as the Washington County Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) program, Business Training Seminars, Citizens Emergency Preparedness Day, Out Reach Speakers, the mission, assisting in the operation of the Washington County Emergency Operations Center and goals and responsibilities are carried out by this group.
