Board of Zoning Appeals

The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) consists of five regular members and two alternates which are appointed by the County Commissioners. 

The BZA is charged, in summary,  with the following:

  • To hear and decide appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination made by an administrative official in regard to the enforcement of the Zoning Ordinance, the Washington County Forest Conservation Ordinance, or of any other applicable County ordinance.
  • To hear and decide special exceptions to the Zoning Ordinance upon which the Board is required to pass.
  • To authorize a variance from height, lot area, yard regulations, parking space requirements, sign regulations, distance requirements, buffer requirements and other distance or dimensional requirements of the Zoning Ordinance.

Filing Information

Filing for a hearing date is done by appointment only. Appointments are accepted Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Hearing Information

Hearings are held in the County Administration Building at 100 W. Washington Street, Room 2000, Hagerstown, Maryland. Meetings start at 6:00 p.m.
