HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 11, 2020) – Washington County Government announces the launching of the NextGen911 initiative. This initiative will be completed in two phases. Phase one will include a countywide update of addresses and numbering to improve location accuracy services for emergency responders. Phase two will be the implementation of new 911 technology.

NextGen911 is a national movement to update 911 technology. This update will allow emergency communicators to receive voice, photos, videos, and text messages. It will also improve the ability to help manage call overload, natural disasters, and transferring of 911 calls to proper jurisdictional responses based on location tracking.
The County will be holding informational meetings in each town and/or municipality for citizens that are impacted with an address update. These updates will begin at the end of February 2020 and will occur throughout the duration of the year.
