Washington County Emergency Management Shares Severe Weather Awareness Information from MDEM

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD (August 20, 2026) – The Washington County Office of Emergency Management is sharing information from the Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM) regarding severe thunderstorms expected across Maryland this afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service, storms are expected to increase in intensity and coverage through the evening hours. Potential threats include:

Damaging wind gusts
Frequent lightning
Brief heavy rainfall
Sporadic hail
An isolated tornado or two

The strongest storms are expected to coincide with the afternoon and evening commute, particularly between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Heavy rainfall could cause localized flooding, while strong winds may down trees and power lines, creating hazardous travel conditions and potential road closures.

Washington County Emergency Management encourages residents to stay weather aware, monitor conditions, and use caution while traveling. Residents should be prepared to adjust travel plans if severe weather develops.
