Washington County Completes Lead Service Line Inventory for County Water Systems

HAGERSTOWN, MD (October 16, 2024) – The Washington County Department of Water Quality is pleased to announce the completion of the Lead Service Line Inventory for all county-operated water systems. This effort reflects our ongoing commitment to providing safe, clean water to all residents and ensuring full transparency regarding service line materials.

To obtain specific information about your service lines, please contact the department by emailing [email protected] or by calling 240-313-2600.

Washington County is proud to report that no lead has been identified in any county-owned service lines. Our team continues its diligent efforts to classify any “Lead Status Unknown” service lines located on the homeowner’s side of the system. Additionally, funding opportunities are available to assist homeowners with the replacement of any identified lead service lines or galvanized service lines in need of replacement.

Health Effects of Lead

Exposure to lead in drinking water can cause serious health issues across all age groups. Infants and children are especially vulnerable, with risks that include decreased IQ, attention span, and potential learning or behavioral problems. Pregnant women exposed to lead may also increase the risk of these effects in their children. Adults exposed to lead may experience elevated risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, and problems related to the kidneys or nervous system.

Washington County encourages all residents to stay informed about their water systems and to take advantage of available resources for service line evaluation and replacement if necessary. Ensuring the health and safety of our community remains our top priority.

For further information, please contact Washington County’s Public Relations and Marketing Department at [email protected].
