Washington County Announces Free Mulch Giveaway at Forty West Landfill

HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 23, 2025) – Washington County Government is pleased to announce a Free Mulch Giveaway at Forty West Landfill beginning Wednesday, May 28, 2025. This limited-time offer comes as a result of the recent storms that brought in a high volume of yard debris, resulting in an overabundance of mulch on site.

To help manage space and put this valuable material to good use, residents of Washington County are invited to pick up free mulch while supplies last. The giveaway is expected to continue for at least two to three weeks—or until the current stockpile is depleted.

Important Guidelines:

  • Open to Washington County residents only. Proof of residency is required.
  • Commercial businesses, re-sellers, and non-residents are not eligible for the free mulch but may still purchase mulch at the regular rate of $30 per ton.
  • Residents must weigh in and out at the landfill scales and follow all blue signs and arrows to the designated mulch pickup area (separate from the for-sale mulch pile).
  • Mulch must be self-loaded. Please bring your own tools, as staff assistance cannot be guaranteed.
  • All vehicles must have a tarp to cover the mulch load—no exceptions. This is required by Maryland state law.

Pickup Hours:

  • Monday through Saturday, 7:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (or any day the landfill is open)
  • Residents must be on the outbound scale by 3:15 p.m.
  • No entry for mulch pickup after 2:30 p.m.

Take advantage of this eco-friendly opportunity to improve your landscaping while helping the County manage natural storm debris. We appreciate your support in keeping Washington County green and clean!

For more information, please contact the Forty West Landfill at 240-313-2790.
