TRAFFIC ALERT: Roads Reopen in Washington County, MD

HAGERSTOWN, MD (September 3, 2021) – The Washington County Highway Department announces the following roads are now open that were closed due to flooding from Tropical Depression Ida:
 
  • Kemps Mill Road from the Mill to Snug Harbor
  • Licking Creek Road from Keefer Road to the dead end
  • Independence Road from Route 40 to the FOP Lodge
  • Wishard Road
  • Pectonville Road at Licking Creek Road
  • Cresspond Road
 
Significant rainfall and heavy winds from Tropical Depression Ida resulted in flooded roadways, fallen trees and debris, as well as downed stop and yield signs, traffic signal failures, power outages, and downed power lines. Washington County road crews actively worked to keep motorists off the streets and to clear debris and downed trees along county roads.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Updated Road Closures in Washington County, MD

HAGERSTOWN, MD (September 2, 2021) – The Washington County Highway Department announces the following new road closures due to flooded roadways:
  • Kemps Mill Road from the Mill to Snug Harbor
  • Licking Creek Road from Keefer Road to the dead end
The following roads remain closed due to flooded roadways:
  • Independence Road from Route 40 to the FOP Lodge
  • Wishard Road
  • Pectonville Road at Licking Creek Road
  • Cresspond Road
The County encourages all citizens to remain off the roads listed above. Please do not drive through standing water on a roadway.
 
Yesterday’s significant rainfall and heavy winds have resulted in flooded roadways, fallen trees and debris, as well as downed stop and yield signs, traffic signal failures, power outages, and downed power lines. Washington County road crews are actively working to keep motorists off the streets and to clear debris and downed trees along county roads.

Flooding is a temporary overflow of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States. Failing to evacuate flooded areas or entering flood waters can lead to injury or death.

Floods may:

  • Result from rain, snow, coastal storms, storm surges and overflows of dams and other water systems.
  • Develop slowly or quickly. Flash floods can come with no warning.
  • Cause outages, disrupt transportation, damage buildings and create landslides.

Liberal Leave is in effective for Washington County Government

LIBERAL LEAVE IS IN EFFECT FOR WASHINGTON COUNTY GOVERNMENT

Liberal leave is in effect for all non-essential personal on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, until noon. Essential personnel are expected to fulfill their duties as usual.

The starting time for today’s Board of County Commissioners meeting will be reevaluated at 9:00 am.

For those required to travel, exercise caution on the roadways. If driving is necessary, ensure your vehicle is completely cleared, drive at a reduced speed, practice caution, and avoid crowding or passing plows.
