Washington County Seeks Assistance in Identifying Water Service Lines Impacted by Lead Contamination

HAGERSTOWN, MD (July 3, 2023) – The Washington County Department of Water Quality urges citizens whose plumbing is serviced by the County to participate in a public survey. The purpose of the survey is to identify households in Washington County, MD that might have lead in their drinking water.

Recent revisions to the Federal Lead and Copper Rule now require water systems to develop a comprehensive inventory of service lines. This measure aims to ensure that the water delivered to customers meets safe drinking water guidelines. Preventing lead contamination in drinking water requires the knowledge of both publicly and privately owned plumbing lines.

Lead in drinking water comes primarily from the leaching of lead from the service lines or joints. Our research indicates that the presence of lead plumbing lines in Washington County, MD is minimal, but we need your assistance in identifying homes that may still contain these lines.

To help us identify any potential lead risks, please visit Water Service Lines Survey to complete the brief survey. Your efforts will go a long way in ensuring the health and safety of our community. Together, we can make a real difference!

For question or concerns, please email [email protected] or call 240-313-2600.
