Washington County and City of Hagerstown Share Investigation Results

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 28, 2019) – On September 24, 2018, Washington County Government and the Division of Emergency Services were contacted regarding an alleged employee dishonesty insurance loss claim with the Volunteer Independent Junior Fire Company. The Independent Junior Fire Company is one of the 26 volunteer fire/EMS companies that serve throughout Washington County and the City of Hagerstown. The Hagerstown Police Department were also contacted and opened an investigation on September 26, 2018 to examine the matter further.

The Division of Emergency Services and the Hagerstown Fire Department informed the Board of County Commissioners and the Mayor and City Council for the City of Hagerstown of the ongoing investigation. As part of the investigation, an audit of the Independent Junior Fire Company was conducted by the Hagerstown Police Department.

On January 24, 2019, the Hagerstown Police Department’s investigation concluded money in the amount of $84,053.88 was stolen from the Independent Junior Fire Company. The investigation confirmed that the Company treasurer stole funds from the Company over the duration of nine years. The defendant in this instance is since deceased and no criminal charges will be filed. These findings were brought before the Board of County Commissioners on February 12, 2019.
