Washington County Employee Heroically Saves Life Following Serious Motorcycle Accident

HAGERSTOWN, MD (September 23, 2025) – On Friday, September 19, 2025, at approximately 6:59 a.m., Washington County Division of Emergency Services were dispatched to a personal injury accident at the intersection of Greencastle Pike and Elliott Parkway. Responders arrived to find that a motorcycle had collided head-on with a tractor-trailer, leaving the rider critically injured.

Before first responders reached the scene, Washington County Stormwater and Watershed Services employee Alex Reed acted without hesitation, providing lifesaving aid. Drawing on his military background, specialized trauma training, and years of preparation, Reed applied a tourniquet from his personal medical kit to control severe bleeding and stabilize the victim. His calm and decisive actions in those first critical minutes are credited with saving a life.

Reed, a U.S. military veteran, has carried trauma kits and tourniquets in his personal vehicles for more than two decades. Earlier this year, he purchased similar kits for his entire team and arranged “Stop the Bleed” training to ensure coworkers would also be prepared to respond in emergencies.

“When the accident happened, I knew what I had to do,” Reed said. “For years, I’ve prepared for a moment like this, and I’m grateful I was able to act. To God be the glory for giving me the courage, presence of mind, and the tools I needed that morning.”

Washington County officials praised Reed’s actions, calling them heroic and a shining example of public service.

“Alex Reed represents the very best of Washington County,” said County Administrator Michelle Gordon. “His selflessness, preparation, and bravery in the face of crisis not only saved a life but also remind us of the extraordinary impact one person can make when they step up in a moment of need.”

The County encourages all residents to consider basic first aid and trauma-response training, noting that early intervention can often make the difference between life and death.
