WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD (January 23, 2026) – Washington County Government has declared a State of Emergency effective 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 23, 2026, in advance of a significant winter storm forecast to impact the county beginning Saturday and continuing through the weekend.
This declaration enables County resources and personnel to be deployed quickly and effectively to ensure the safety and well-being of residents. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Washington County, predicting significant snowfall, hazardous travel conditions, and the potential for power outages and limited visibility.
“Declaring a State of Emergency allows us to mobilize our departments and coordinate with local and state partners to prepare for the incoming weather system,” said Alan Matheny, Director of Emergency Management and Communications. “We ask all residents to stay informed, limit travel during hazardous conditions, and ensure emergency supplies are on hand.”
County divisions and departments are actively monitoring conditions and have crews prepared to respond. Residents are urged to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel once snow begins to fall.
- Keep emergency kits with essential supplies on hand.
- Monitor official County updates through the Washington County Government website, local news outlets, and official social media channels for weather updates and emergency information.
- Report power outages directly to your utility provider. DO NOT call 911 to report a power outage.
Washington County Government encourages residents to check on neighbors, especially older adults, individuals with disabilities, and those with limited resources. Residents are also encouraged to stay informed through official County communications as conditions evolve. Sign up to receive emergency and weather alerts directly to your phone.
