Washington County Commissioner Derek Harvey Resigns

The Washington County Board of County Commissioners announces that Commissioner Derek Harvey has submitted his resignation, effective February 24, 2026.

Commissioner Harvey was elected in 2022 to serve a four-year term on the Board.

In his resignation letter, he cited new business opportunities that better align with the needs of his family and long-term professional goals as the reason for his departure. He resides in Smithsburg with his wife and three children.
A retired U.S. Army Colonel, Commissioner Harvey served as an Airborne Ranger Infantry Officer and earned numerous commendations, including the Bronze Star and multiple Meritorious Service Medals. Following his military career, he continued his public service as a Senior Intelligence Executive. His prior experience also includes roles on Capitol Hill as Lead Investigator and Senior Advisor to the House Permanent Select Intelligence Committee, as well as service on the White House National Security Council under President Donald J. Trump.

The Board of County Commissioners extends its sincere appreciation to Commissioner Harvey for his dedicated service to Washington County and wishes him continued success in his future endeavors.

The County Attorney has notified the Washington County Republican Central Committee of the vacancy. The Committee will submit a recommendation to Governor Wes Moore, who will make the official appointment to fill the remainder of the term.
