Tropical Storm Debby to Impact Washington County: Prepare for Severe Weather Conditions

HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 8, 2024) – The Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor Tropical Storm Debby. The remnants of Tropical Storm Debby are expected to bring significant weather impacts to Washington County starting from midnight tonight through Friday evening, according to the latest briefing from the National Weather Service (NWS) Baltimore/Washington.

Key Threats:

  • Flash Flooding: Heavy rainfall of 3 to 5 inches is expected, with localized amounts up to 7 inches possible. This will increase the risk of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
  • Minor River Flooding: Local rivers may experience minor flooding due to the excessive rainfall.
  • Tornadoes: Tornadoes are possible across the region late tonight through Friday afternoon.
  • Gusty Winds: Winds of 30 to 50 mph, with higher gusts, are anticipated, which may cause power outages and tree damage.

Preparedness Actions:

Residents are urged to stay informed and take precautions ahead of the storm. Please secure outdoor items, avoid driving through flooded areas, and monitor local alerts for updates.

  • Flood Watch: A Flood Watch is in effect, with the bulk of rainfall expected from midnight tonight into Friday morning.
  • Tornadoes: There is a potential for tornadoes to form.
  • Power Outages: Prepare for potential power outages by charging devices and having emergency supplies ready.
  • Do not call 911 to report your power outage. To report a power outage to Potomac Edison dial 1-888-544-4877 or text OUT to 54487.

The bulk of the rainfall is expected late tonight into Friday morning. Our area is expected to receive 3-5” of rainfall.

The Washington County Division of Emergency Services Special Operations is equipped with five boats staffed for swift water rescue, with two available for deployment to other jurisdictions. Additionally, a Mobile Ambulance Bus (MAB) and high water vehicles are on standby, ready to respond to emergencies as needed.
