Precautionary Boil Advisory for Mt. Aetna Water System

Precautionary Boil Advisory for Mt. Aetna Water System

HAGERSTOWN, MD (October 5, 2023) – The Washington County Division of Environmental Management announces a precautionary boil water advisory for customers within the Mt. Aetna Water System. This advisory has been initiated due to a water main break and subsequent repair, which necessitates this precautionary measure.

In the interest of public health and safety, we recommend that all affected customers take the following precautions until further notice:

  1. Boil All Water: Boil all water used for food preparation, teeth brushing, ice making, and drinking. Bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one (1) minute to ensure it is safe for consumption. After boiling, please allow the water to cool before use.
  2. Ice Use: Do not consume or use ice that has been made within the past 3 hours. It is advisable to discard any ice until the boil water advisory is lifted.
  3. Bathing and Washing: The water is safe for bathing and washing without boiling.

This advisory is a precautionary measure to safeguard public health and will remain in effect until water service is fully restored, and water quality tests confirm the safety of the water supply. This process can take up to 2 days.

During this period, the Washington County Division of Environmental Management will continue to monitor and work diligently to resolve the situation promptly.

For more information, residents should call the Washington County Division of Environmental Management office at 240-313-2600.
