Economic development is profoundly affected by the strategic planning and implementation of road networks.

Four major roadway projects have played a pivotal role in shaping the economic development in Washington County.

Halfway Boulevard connecting to MD Route 63 (Greencastle Pike) at Newgate Boulevard provided an alternative route between Interstate 81 and Interstate 70. This advancement in road network opened the opportunity to attract Hitachi Rail to select Washington County to build a 300,000 square foot manufacturing facility.

Crayton Boulevard extension provided an additional service route to the Hagerstown Regional Airport and an alternative route between Exit 9 and Exit 10 on Interstate 81.

This connected Maugans Avenue to Showalter Road opening roughly 260 acres for economic development projects.  This resulted in the site selection by Amazon to locate a 1.2M sq/ft cold and freezer logistics facility, one of three strategic locations in the United States.

Professional Boulevard Corridor made a connection to Mt. Aetna Technology Park , reduced emergency service response times from Eastern Boulevard to The Meritus Medical Center and allows traffic to avoid a route with multiple traffic signals.  Mt. Aetna Technology park is 153 acres designated and specially zoned by Washington County, MD to support the development of advanced technological or biological industries in the community.  The vision is to create partnerships with the park’s neighbors, Hagerstown Community College and Meritus Health.

Colonel Henry K Douglas Drive construction extended the road from Route 65 (Sharpsburg Pike) to Bushwillow Way in the Cross Creek Subdivision. The land surrounding the road has developed into a center of amenities supporting the residential developments in the area, these include Aldi Grocery Store, Dunkin Donuts, Taco Bell, AutoZone and a new restaurant.

Washington County’s strategic investments into roadway and other supporting infrastructure continues to strengthen the economic development outlook as our business community becomes even more diverse with flourishing opportunities to grow!
