GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs professional and technical work, under the direction of the Fire Plans Examiner in conducting residential and non-residential building inspections for life safety compliance. This position requires a high level of professionalism and customer service.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Enforces county and state fire code regulations, NFPA 1, NFPA 101 and Maryland Fire Prevention Code.
Performs inspections of all types of buildings and property to ensure compliance with the Fire Codes.
Investigates fire code violations.
Participates in the development and delivery of fire code safety education programs.
Research, interprets and utilizes fire codes in response to applicants, architects, engineers, contractors and the public.
Reviews on-site approved plans for fire extinguishing systems, fire alarm systems, flammable or combustible liquid installations, hazardous materials, site development plans and other fire protection systems.
Participates in training sessions related to life safety and building issues to keep abreast of current practices.
Performs a wide variety of clerical work including filing, tracking, checking and recording information for permits and service request.
Performs other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Extensive knowledge and experience with life safety codes including NFPA, 1, 13, 72, 101 and /or ICC International Fire Code.
Working knowledge of building construction materials.
Ability to effectively read and interpret architectural drawings, plans, specifications and site plans quickly and accurately to ensure fire code compliance.
Strong and effective written and oral communication skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate’s degree in Fire Science, Construction, Engineering, Architecture or any other relevant program (preferred)
Minimum of 2-4 years’ experience conducting life safety codes and other appropriate fire codes inspections.
NFPA Certified Fire Inspector I & II (required)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, and copier. This position requires you to be out in the elements of weather, cold, heat, rain and snow during you tour of duty as well as walking, standing, kneeling and being around construction sites each day.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license.
