HAGERSTOWN, MD (July 21, 2025) – Washington County Government is proud to announce that Washington County Transit has received exciting news that its competitive BUILD (Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development) Grant application will be awarded in full—totaling $2.8 million in 100% federally funded support. The funding covers design and permitting costs for a new County Transit Administration and Maintenance Facility, a vital step towards modernizing and supporting transit services in the County.
The grant, part of nearly $500 million announced by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy, is intended to invest in critical infrastructure across the nation and expand transportation access in both rural and urban areas. Washington County Transit’s successful application was supported by the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT).
“This award is a game-changer for public transportation in Washington County,” said Board of County Commissioners President John Barr. “By investing in our transit infrastructure, we are investing in the future of our workforce, our seniors, and our students. This funding will help connect people to opportunity—and ensure Washington County continues to move forward.”
Project Overview:
- Grant Award: $2.8 million
- Funding Source: 100% federal funds through the BUILD program
- Project Purpose: Design of a new Washington County Transit Administration and Maintenance Facility
- Support: Application supported by the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT)
“Expanding safe transit options and affordably connecting Marylanders to jobs and economic opportunities are MDOT’s top priorities,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld. “This BUILD grant will advance Washington County’s new bus facility to final design, laying the foundation for the growth of the county’s transit system. This will help to ensure residents have access to growing employment opportunities in logistics and warehousing, while also improving access to essential services like medical facilities – especially for older adults. Thank you to Maryland’s federal delegation, Washington County, and the Maryland Transit Administration for working together to bolster transit in Western Maryland.”
The facility will allow Washington County Transit to expand in its current location, while providing much needed space for administrative offices, fleet maintenance, driver training, and the room and equipment to support future transit service expansion. This marks a critical investment in the long-term efficiency, sustainability and accessibility of public transit in the region.
Design planning is expected to begin later this year.
