Save Historic Antietam Foundation Preserves Battlefield Property

Hagerstown, MD (December 8, 2023) – On November 28th, Save Historic Antietam Foundation, Inc. preserved its property on Harpers Ferry Road in Sharpsburg, Maryland through the American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP). The 0.92-acre property was significant to the Battle of Antietam as the location where General Burnside’s Union forces clashed with General Hill’s Confederate forces.

This conservation easement will protect the property in perpetuity and allow the land area to convert back to how it looked at the time of the battle. The easement was purchased in-part with funds from the National Park Service’s Land and Water Conservation Fund, using Washington County as a pass-thru entity for the procurement of the easement.

For more information regarding the land preservation programs the County offers, please contact Chris Boggs, Rural Preservation Administrator, at 240-313-2447, or via email at [email protected].
