Hagerstown Regional Airport Promotes “Are You Remote ID Ready?” Initiative for Drone Pilots

HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 14, 2023) – On behalf of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Hagerstown Regional Airport (HGR) promotes the launch of the “Are You Remote ID Ready?” initiative, aimed at ensuring that all drone pilots comply with the new Remote Identification (ID) rule set by the FAA. Starting September 16, 2023, drone operators are required to operate their drones under the Remote ID rule, contributing to safer and more efficient skies.

The Remote ID rule mandates that drone pilots must operate their drones in one of the following ways:

1. Standard Remote ID Drone: Utilize a drone that comes equipped with built-in Remote ID broadcast capabilities.
2. Drone with a Remote ID Broadcast Module: Attach a Remote ID broadcast module, a device with Remote ID broadcast capabilities, to the drone.
3. FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA): Drone operators without Remote ID broadcast capabilities can fly their drones in designated FAA-Recognized Identification Areas. These areas are available through requests made by FAA-recognized community-based organizations and educational institutions via FAADroneZone.

To determine if your drone or broadcast module is Remote ID Ready, follow these steps:

1. Visit the FAA UAS Declaration of Compliance website.
2. Click on “View Public DOC List.”
3. Apply the “RID” filter to narrow down your search.
4. Search for your specific drone or broadcast module.

For drone pilots whose drones or broadcast modules are not listed on the Public DOC List, operation is limited to FAA-Recognized Identification Areas (FRIA).

If your drone or broadcast module is listed on the Public DOC List, you need to take the following steps:

1. Register or update your existing drone registration via FAADroneZone.
2. Include the serial number of the Standard Remote ID drone or Remote ID broadcast module in your registration.

To learn more, visit FAA’s Remote ID webpage. Recreational pilots have the flexibility to register once and apply the unique registration number to multiple aircraft. This enables the transfer of a Remote ID broadcast module from one drone to another, as long as they share the same registration.

Part 107 pilots must register each Standard Remote ID drone or Remote ID broadcast module individually, resulting in each unit receiving a distinct registration number.
