WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD (November 6, 2026) – The Washington County Division of Environmental Management, Department of Water Quality, has completed an Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) upgrade and expansion of the Smithsburg Wastewater Treatment Plant, improving nutrient removal capabilities and increasing capacity to accommodate planned growth.
The project increased the plant’s permitted design capacity from 0.333 million gallons per day (MGD) to 0.45 MGD, an increase of approximately 35%.
Upgrades to the existing facility were designed to reduce total nitrogen levels to 4.0 milligrams per liter (mg/L) and total phosphorus levels to 0.3 mg/L. Together, these improvements enhance the plant’s treatment capabilities while preparing the facility to serve future wastewater treatment needs within Washington County.
