| WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD (August 7, 2026) – Washington County Government invites residents, visitors, and history enthusiasts to attend the Washington County 250th Anniversary George Washington Statue Dedication on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at the Andrew F. Wilkinson Courthouse, 95 W. Washington Street, Hagerstown. The dedication marks another milestone in the county’s yearlong 250th Anniversary celebration, commemorating Washington County’s founding on September 6, 1776. The seven-foot bronze statue honors General George Washington, the county’s namesake, and celebrates Washington County’s distinction as the first county in the nation to be named in his honor. Created by renowned local sculptor Toby Mendez, the statue stands at the entrance to the historic Washington County Courthouse. The memorial features educational inscriptions highlighting George Washington’s life, leadership, and lasting contributions to the nation while creating a welcoming gathering space for residents and visitors alike. “This statue is more than a work of art, it is a tribute to the legacy of the man for whom our county was named and a lasting symbol of the values that have shaped Washington County for 250 years,” said John F. Barr, President of the Washington County Board of County Commissioners. “As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we are proud to dedicate a memorial that will educate, inspire, and welcome future generations.” Designed to endure for generations, the George Washington statue will serve as a permanent landmark recognizing the county’s rich history and its unique place in the nation’s story. It stands as both a tribute to the past and an invitation for future generations to learn about the people and events that shaped Washington County.
