New Budget Proposal Leads to Additional Public Hearing

HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 22, 2019) – The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has scheduled a public hearing for June 4, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.

This public hearing has been scheduled to present the proposed Fiscal Year 2020 Budget for Washington County Government. In their May 21, 2019 Washington County Board of County Commissioners meeting, the Board of County Commissioners considered a revised budget proposal. The revenue changes to the plan include elimination of any property tax increase in the proposed Budget; leaving the property tax rate at 0.948%. To provide adequate revenue for Public Safety, Education, Infrastructure and other essential services without any increase to the property tax rate, a slightly higher income tax rate has been proposed, above the current income tax rate of 2.80%. The proposed rate would increase the income tax rate to 3.20%; a total difference of 0.40%. Under the Disparity Grant formula administered by the State of Maryland, the proposed income tax rate will allow for more Maryland State funding dollars to return to Washington County.
