Washington County Street Sweeper Program Hits 9 Million Pounds of Debris Collected

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD (July 10, 2025) – Washington County Department of Stormwater and Watershed Services is proud to announce the Clean County Street Sweeper has now collected over 9 million pounds of debris off streets and roadways across the County.

This major milestone reflects years of dedication to cleaner streets, healthier waterways, and a more sustainable community. The debris—consisting of dirt, litter, leaves, and pollutants—was prevented from entering storm drains and local streams, reinforcing the County’s ongoing efforts to protect natural resources through the Clean County Initiative.

The success of this program is due in large part to the hard work of Jack and Al, the County employees behind the wheel of the sweeper. Day in and day out, their commitment ensures our roads stay clean, safe, and environmentally sound. As well as Solid Waste mechanics Tyler and Mark, who work around the clock to ensure that the sweeper is always on the road.

About the Clean County Initiative:

The Clean County Initiative is Washington County’s comprehensive approach to reducing stormwater pollution and improving water quality. Street sweeping plays a key role by capturing pollutants before they reach the watershed, contributing to a cleaner and greener community for future generations.
