As a critical component of Washington County’s infrastructure, the Department of Water Quality's mission is clear... "To protect the environment and public health. To Further the goals of Washington County by providing safe, reliable, efficient and cost effective water and wastewater services with respect to construction, operation, maintenance, and management of systems, in compliance with Local, State and Federal Regulations". This dedicated team operates seven days a week to provide these crucial services to the area. Headquartered in Williamsport Maryland this department is responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of 10 domestics wastewater plants, 9 water treatment facilities, 40 pumping stations, 1800 grinder and low pressure pumps and miles of pipes and lines. The department also operates a state-of-the-art industrial wastewater pretreatment facility that is regarded as a benchmark in public wastewater management. The department was recently presented the Governor’s Award of Excellence for its Biological Nutrient Removal initiatives which is indicative of numerous other awards and accolades received throughout its years of operation. The Washington County Department of Water Quality has a challenging role in the community’s future. Because of its proximity to Washington D.C. and Baltimore, and its relationship to two of the nations busiest highways, growth is a certainty. The Department of Water Quality will be a critical factor in the smart planning and management of the area and its resources.
