
Gregory B. Murray was appointed County Administrator February 27, 2007 after ten years as the Director of the County’s Department of Water Quality, and 24 years of service to local government. Greg now has 28 years of public administration service and leadership to rely on in his role as County Administrator, giving him an extensive knowledge of the County’s infrastructure needs, planning and regulatory issues. His management and public administration experience spans budgeting and budget management, strategic planning, personnel management, organizational efficiency, facility management and design, regulatory compliance, project management, system and program evaluation, training, computer system and technology implementation, and governmental operations including prior service with municipal government as a Public Works Director.
Greg graduated from Heritage Academy, an academically oriented preparatory school, attended Hagerstown Junior College and then graduated with summa cum laude honors upon completion of his Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He is also currently involved in the Master of Public Administration program of the University of Baltimore.
He is a member of the American Society of Public Administration, American Public Works Association, County Engineers Association of Maryland, American Water Works Association, and the Water Environment Federation as well as numerous advisory boards and commissions. Greg also holds several top environmental licenses for management of public utilities and was appointed by Governor Robert Ehrlich to the original Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund Advisory Committee. He was subsequently reappointed to chair the committee by Governor Martin O’Malley and currently serves in that capacity. He has worked closely with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Maryland Department of the Environment to help guide policy decisions that improve the quality of available resources in the State.
In 2006, Greg was selected by the Ministry of Personnel of the Peoples Republic of China along with the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs to represent Washington County and the environmental community as an international expert for exchange of technologies and ideas with the public and private sectors in Shandong Province, Peoples Republic of China, and has twice traveled to serve in that capacity.
A native of Washington County, Greg currently resides with his family in the Smithsburg area.
