Home Chemical Safety
Proclamation of Home Chemical Safety Week – One week each year is designated Home Chemical Safety Week by the Washington County Commissioners.  The County Commissioners cites the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) for its contributions to the community through programs of emergency planning and notification, Community-Right-To-Know and toxic inventory reporting. 
Washington County Home Chemical Safety Program – The Home Chemical Safety Program was implemented in 1996 by the Education Committee of the Local Emergency Planning Committee.  Each year the LEPC, Emergency Management, and the Special Operations Team host a poster contest about home chemical safety in the elementary schools.  The Washington County Public Schools partners with the Local Emergency Planning Committee to voluntarily teach Home Chemical Safety. The curriculum consists of teaching fourth grade students the safe handling, use and the storage of home chemicals.  Each school selects a poster winner to represent their school.  The school winner receives a silver medal and an invitation to attend the County Commissioners meeting where they are introduced and the top three grand prizewinners are announced.
All school winning posters are displayed during the week outside the County Commissioners meeting room.  All school winners are taken to lunch as guest of the Special Operations Team and escorted back to their schools.  Since the implementation of this program approximately 2,000 children have been taught chemical safety.
