Ham Radio Enthusiasts Gather to Transmit Their Signals ...

Reported by: Jeannie Flitner
Saturday, Jun 27, 2009 @05:08pm EDT
LEITERSBURG, MD - A local club reached all parts of the country Saturday as an annual meeting brought members together.

Amateur Radio enthusiasts gathered for the Ham Radio Festival at the Ruritan Park in Leitersburg.

Ham radio is a way for amateur radio volunteers to transmit communication signals all over the world.

Although most members admit it is a hobby, ham radio has proven to be much more.

Butch Eigenbrode of the Antietam Radio Association said, "They played a very huge role in Hurricane Katrina."

Since ham radios are battery powered, they are reliable in emergency situations.

"When Mother Nature comes in with floods or hurricanes or these other elements you still have an opportunity to communicate with people," said Karin Christensen, another member of the Antietam Radio Association.

The Antietam Radio Association is affiliated with Washington County Emergency Services.  The volunteer members are ready to serve the call of duty at any time.

As a part of their annual festival, the members are there to recruit new members from the community.

For those interested in ham radio, you can actually come transmit all across the country, and a licensed operator will be near you to help you.  The members encourage anyone to come try it.

The Ham Radio Festival will continue Sunday at the Leitersburg Ruritan Park until 2:00 p.m.
